2 years ago, I was suffering through an inflamed disc, struggling to get out of bed and unable to sit down for more than half an hour without feeling shooting pains running down my leg.
When Munya told me “you know what will fix your back? A 200kg deadlift” I assumed he was joking, but I trained hard and I trained consistently. Wherever we could we worked around the injury and I made sure I never allowed my bulging disc to turn into a convenient excuse to stop going to the gym. Today that hard work and consistency has finally paid off with a 220kg deadlift PR, a goal that seemed completely unobtainable only a couple of years ago!
And, Munya was right! My back feels better now than it did before my disc decided to throw its little tantrum.
So, please nobody tell me that you can’t deadlift because you pulled your back once 5 years ago, or that you avoid deadlifts because they’re bad for your back. You know what’s worse for your back? Being weak. And if your back stays weak you’ll probably pull it again doing something stupid like gardening.
If I’ve learnt anything from this whole experience it’s to be grateful for the obstacles that come between you and your goals in life because overcoming these obstacles is what makes the entire thing worthwhile (and as an added bonus it also makes your Facebook posts about the whole thing much more inspiring).
