When I first started training with Munya, I wasn’t sure I could ever be the type of person I saw on his Instagram account. I wasn’t even sure I wanted to be ‒ it was kind of intimidating. I was the type of person who went to the gym to run on the treadmill (usually as punishment for binge eating), or to go once-around the machine circuit (on the lowest possible weight). The heavy weights section of the gym was for the big muscley dudes and the super confident girls in crop tops ‒ not for me.
But it’s easy to trust Munya ‒ he’s someone who talks passionately and excitedly about your potential, who lays out all his knowledge simply in front of you, and who frankly looks like a goddamn specimen of a human himself. Instantly from meeting him, I felt comfortable and supported to give this whole training thing a try.
After nine weeks, my ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots speak volumes about how much I’ve changed from training with Munya. Week one I was binge eating, still too shy to train if the gym was busy, and not sure I even wanted to lift anything much heavier than say ‒ 50 kilos? Even that seemed like a lot.
But each week, I saw the numbers going up and started learning more from him. I began boasting to friends and family about different goals I was surpassing (they all got a video of my first body weight squat). I felt leaner and I felt stronger. I started learning about the effects different foods had on me and I naturally started eating better. I was really proud of myself for the first time in a long time, and I was encouraged by they fact Munya was proud of my hard work.
Nine weeks later ‒ aside from the fact I have abs for the first time in my life ‒ the biggest change has been a mental one. I’ve realised I am physically capable of changing my body (as a binge eater, that was something I wasn’t sure I could ever feel in control of). I am able to walk confidently into the heavy section of the gym and know my form is on-point (and better than half the muscley dudes there, to be honest). I am the type of person I saw and never thought I could be.
I would hardly recognise the girl who now excitedly skips into the gym and racks up a 90 kilo trap bar (even once in a crop top), feeling like a strong-ass queen.
I can confidently say Munya has changed my outlook on fitness, my body and my self. He is one of the most incredibly supportive people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. His passion for helping people is evident every step of the way (from the check-in texts, to the post-set fist bumps). On a bad day, there’s no one better to have in your corner, reminding you that you hit a PB here, or a new rep range there. On a good day, there’s no one who will celebrate your work harder. I honestly can’t recommend training with Munya enough.
